operations & systems management

Read about the teaching and research in the Operations and Systems Management subject group

Effective operations and systems management helps businesses of all sizes deliver their products and services to customers in time and cost-efficient ways. In an age of increasing global competition – where every inch gained or minute lost is important – it's vital to have intelligent systems in place.

In the Operations and Systems Management subject group, we explore every important aspect of the subject. Through our teaching we produce graduates skilled in applying project and quality management, digital technology, and data analytics skills to real problems – from fixing issues in an organisation's strategy processes, to improving products, platforms, partnerships and customer service.

The Operations and Systems Management subject group is part of the Portsmouth Business School, and sits within the University's Faculty of Business and Law.

Our academic staff are experts in the fields of project management, digital business management and transformation, quality management, operations research, and analytics. Many also have extensive industry experience, which informs their teaching.

We have a strong link with the Germany company SAP, the Global leader in enterprise systems, and we're home to an advanced SAP Leonardo Next Gen Lab – one of only two in the UK. Alongside our Business Simulation Suite, the Next Gen Lab gives our students the chance to engage closely with the frontier of industry practice, and put their skills into practice in a simulated environment. Many of our graduates have progressed into successful careers at global companies.

We have specialist knowledge and skills in virtualisation and business process innovation, decision science, ICT adoption and impact, quality management, six sigma and organisational excellence, business intelligence, data mining, knowledge management, and system thinking.

Our research focuses on applied management techniques and technologies – and through collaboration and knowledge transfer partnerships (KTPs) with organisations around the world, our work is helping address both business and societal issues.

The group has a reputation for research excellence and between 2018 and 2019, has produced more than 60 academic journal papers. We've also become an attractive destination for international scholars, with more than 30 doctoral research students.

Many of our staff are members of the Centre for Operational Research and Logistics (CORL), where we deliver interdisciplinary research focusing on topics such as sustainable logistics management and modelling. We're also involved in the University's research themes that address issues in health and wellbeing, future and emerging technologies, security and risk, and sustainability and environment.

Funders and collaborations

We've generated more than £1.2 million in research and innovation income from the European Union (EU), United Kingdom Research Council (UKRC), Horizon2020, Innovate UK and other bodies. We've also worked in collaboration with major institutions to deliver research projects such as CoBra – a European Regional Development Fund-supported project, which aims to improve quality of diagnosis and treatment of localised cancers.
