Visiting scholars and researchers
Working at Portsmouth
There are many reasons to work with us at Portsmouth – from our outstanding facilities and award-winning research, to our gold-rated teaching.
How to apply
Joining us as a visiting scholar, academic or researcher takes a few simple steps.
Step 1
You need someone to propose you as a visiting scholar from your current institution. Your proposer should send your CV and a covering letter to the Dean of the relevant Faculty at the University of Portsmouth.
Your covering letter needs to explain how your research overlaps with our research priorities and existing expertise.
If you're not currently based at a university, you'll need to supply 3 referees with your initial submission.
Step 2
After reviewing your CV and covering letter, the Dean will make a recommendation to our Vice-Chancellor, who will seek advice from our Vice-Chancellor for Research and two other Professors.
Step 3
If your application requires it, you may be invited to attend an interview.
Step 4
Once your application is accepted, we'll discuss your duties as a visiting member of staff. Your duties will be clearly defined and will include visiting the University for teaching activities, research work or a combination of both. There will also be a clear agreement regarding the intellectual property rights to any work you do while you're here.
Step 5
You'll need to obtain the right to work in the UK and sort out accommodation for when you arrive in Portsmouth. For more information, please visit our 'Arriving from overseas' page.
