Small Business Charter

Read about our Small Business charter accreditation

The Small Business Charter (SBC) is awarded to business schools in the UK that offer world-class support to students and local businesses.

We have held the award since 2015 when we applied for accreditation as a process to independently evaluate our work and its impact. Holding the award helps students and SMEs find a school that can provide growth, support and enterprise.

As part of the process the SBC assessed us on 3 main areas:

  • Supporting small businesses
  • Student entrepreneurship
  • Engagement in the local economy

After a visit from assessors the SBC Management Board awarded us their 5 year kitemark status. This makes us 1 of only 34 business schools in the UK to receive their recognition.

The work of the University and the Business School is greatly enhanced through our engagement with the business community contributing to our broader range of academic activities, including the development of student entrepreneurial skills and in the support and development of wider economic and social opportunities for business

Professor Jeremy Howells, Dean of the Business School

The award meant additional funding was made available to expand our portfolio into two new areas:

  • Small business and enterprise development
  • Small business and entrepreneurship areas

A dedicated small business manager was brought on board to oversee our accreditation and introduce new programmes. Other initiatives linked to the expanded portfolio and our SBC accreditation include:

  • Raising awareness through regular events
  • Finding examples of best practice by linking with other institutes through the SBC network
  • Integrating new initiatives, including our Entrepreneurs in Residence Scheme
  • Support and development of the Student Entrepreneurs Society
  • Increase engagement of the Business School with local small businesses, startups and entrepreneurs by offering services like Innovation Connect
