Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for the Study of a Transnational Europe
We are privileged to have been awarded the title of Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for the study of a Transnational Europe (CESTE2). We gained the title for a second time in 2017, having first hosted a Centre of Excellence in 2013. Mark Field is Director of the Centre and also holds the prestigious title of Jean Monnet Chair.
Our unique centre is interdisciplinary, encompassing researchers from a broad range of disciplines including Politics, International Relations, History and European Studies, forging a strong and diverse research team generating innovative and excellent research.
Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence were established 30 years ago to increase and diversify higher education research within the area of European Studies as well as sharing the findings with relevant partners. There are now activities within higher education institutions within 87 countries. They are funded through the European Union Erasmus Plus programme and run for a 3 year term. This project has had an approved EU extension until August 2021, in light of COVID-19.

EU In Practice is our free online course in the policy and law of the European Union: how it is applied at European, national and global level and how it impacts in relations between states, on business and people. Covering fundamental rules of EU law and specific applications, it offers the chance to develop a solid understanding of the impact of European Union law and policy on the member-states, on other states, on EU and non-EU citizens, European and global businesses.

CESTE2 focuses on current EU politics, European integration and disintegration. Our centre addresses three main streams:
- Exploring narratives about European integration
- Societal Actors and (trans)national networking in a disintegrating Europe stream
- Improving our understanding of global actors’ narratives about and engagement with European integration and the EU.
Developed both intellectually and in terms of outputs and outcomes, the streams are also linked by a shared interest in:
- disintegration trends in the EU
- strengthening teaching innovation
- enhancing our engagement with organised groups and citizens
Successful and engaging outputs and outcomes have been disseminated through a variety of formats:
- Academic publications, reports and briefing papers
- National and international conferences, seminars and workshops
- A free online course successfully developed in “The policy and law of the European Union”
- “Teaching Young People European Studies” simulations undertaken both nationally and regionally - most recently in Portsmouth secondary schools - to engage young people in European studies, to enhance their knowledge and understanding thereof and to boost interest in studying European studies in higher education
Our projects focus on transnational Europe: processes and practices of political, societal and cultural “transnationalisation” which are in part induced by the European Union and in part driven by societal actors like business groups and public interest groups.
You will find our work disseminated through conferences and seminars, academic publication, reports and briefing papers, and through a brand new EU-related teaching unit. It is shaped by three cross-disciplinary streams:
Actors and Stories: Narrating European Integration in Times of Disintegration
The first stream will be dedicated to European Integration in Times of Disintegration and led by Professor Wolfram Kaiser, Professor of European Studies. Collaborative work with colleagues across CEISR will support this stream, including Dr Richard McMahon, Lecturer in European Studies and the Living Memory Forum in Stockholm will explore the following:
- Actors and Stories: Narrating European Integration in Times of Disintegration
- Disciplinary Narratives of European Integration
- Contributions to newsletters and newspapers: Counter-Narratives opposing European Integration and the EU
Societal Actors and (trans)national networking in a disintegrating Europe
The second stream will be led by Dr Nora Siklodi, Lecturer in Politics, with colleagues Professor Karen Heard-Laureote and Dr Mark Field dedicated to Societal Actors and (trans)national networking in a disintegrating Europe stream. Stream 2 will create a platform for cooperation of high- level experts in EU politics and leading scholars in political sociology and migration studies. Stream 2 will further bring together high-level experts from academia, civil society organisations and state institutions to better inform the UK government’s handling of the fallout from the ‘Brexit’ referendum. This will be conducted under the following areas:
- EU Studies Hub & CESTE Website; looking at the revolution of communication through social media and the internet
- Citizens’ reactions to the disintegration of Europe
- Advisory Report to New Europeans; detailing best practices for native UK and mobile EU citizens about how to promote and safeguard their EU citizenship in a post-Brexit context
- Joint report to European Coalition for Vision & New Europeans following joint workshop
Europe’s Responses to Transnational Challenges in Increasingly Turbulent World
Stream 3 will be led by Professor Wolfram Kaiser, with colleague Dr Richard McMahon. The stream will be dedicated to Europe’s Responses to Transnational Challenges in Increasingly Turbulent World. The project in Stream 3 will focus on Chinese narratives in the first instance but aims to create a basis for a globally comparative project on external narratives of European integration through:

Brexit on Page and Stage
22 November 2019: What impact will Brexit have on culture in Britain? What impact is it having already? This event considered these issues through an interactive theatre performance, a talk on the British mounting of the musical Hamilton, and a panel discussion and debate.
Citizenship and Democracy in (Dis)integrating Communities; Europe – And Beyond
27-28 June 2019: This conference and workshop offered a professional and critical setting for networking opportunity to academics, practitioners, and policy-makers. The aim of the event was to bring together members of these groups in order to discuss and debate recent developments in national and European citizenship and democracy.
Narratives of Europe's Shared Past: Between Singularity of the Holocaust and Totalitarian Paradigm

Counter-narratives to Regional Cooperation: Contesting European Union
13-14 May 2019: At a time when transnational and international cooperation increasingly faces aggressive criticism and outright opposition, this conference explored the particular case of counter-narratives to European integration. Käte Hamburger Kolleg/Centre for Global Cooperation Research.
2018 Seminars - Brexit as it Unfolds
The Centre for the Study of Transnational Europe (CESTE II) held its 2018 programme of public seminars under the title 'Brexit as it unfolds'. In a series of discussion seminars, experts discussed the implications of Brexit in the context of their particular fields.
