The MOVE (Facilitating MAES to support regional policy in OVerseas Europe: mobilizing stakeholders and pooling resources) pilot project aims to involve policy makers, researchers and civil society in the development of methodologies for mapping and assessing the state of ecosystems and their services in outermost regions (OR) and overseas countries and territories (OCT).

The project will start by assessing the MAES (Mapping and Assessing Ecosystem Services) exercise taking place within the participating overseas regions. It will also take an inventory of the human and material capacities present in each of them.

The geographical, political and knowledge base fragmentation of these entities will be turned into assets through a coordinated and synergistic approach, which pools resources and builds robust participatory tools.

Seven specific regions – each with particular focus of work – will then be chosen as case studies. In each region, a dedicated team of local experts, policy makers and civil society members will be working, pooled from across the OR and OCTs.

As well as producing a tangible contribution for the MAES exercise, this project aims to demonstrate the possibility and the added-value of a bottom-up approach, involving and capacitating local actors.

Project locations include Macaronesia, Réunion Island, French Guiana, South Atlantic UK Overseas territories, Martinique, Dutch Caribbean, and New Caledonia.
